The Ant Kaiju!

Posted in The Kaiju Art Collection, Tokusatsu, Toy Reviews with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 31, 2008 by REdYOdA

It’s Kaiju Gabari! … from Masked Ninja Red Shadow!

As promised in yesterdays post, here is one more for the Kaiju Art Collection before I take a little trip to New Mexico and Roswell.

Gabari is a nightmarish monster from the 1967-68 tokusatsu series: Kamen no Ninja Aka-Kage or ‘Masked Ninja Red Shadow” The creepy Kaiju appears near the end of the series in an episode entitled ‘Ari kaijû Gabari’ or ‘Ant Monster Gabari’.

The ‘Gabari’ vinyl figure is produced by the Japanese kaiju toy comapny Dream Rocket. Dream Rocket updated the sculpt of Gabari for their very limited 2007 releases of the kaiju, I believe there are only 5 variants of the Ant monster available, with every run of Gabari limited to less than 50 figures.

The figure is striking in person, coming in at 9″ tall and 10″ long…it does require a decent amount of display shelf real estate. The eerie toy showcases Dream Rocket’s usual superior vinyl quality and attention to detail.

The version I used for the Kaiju Art Collection photograph above is my Dream Rocket/Max Toy collaboration Gabari. This particular Gabari variant is cast in clear yellow with glitter vinyl and finished with purple and green sprays…it’s a stunner!!!

Below is a Masked Ninja Red Shadow video…if you look closely you can catch a quick peek at the O.G. Gabari! Also a nice little glimpse of another favorite Dream-Rocket kaiju of mine...Agon the beetle kaiju!

…and remember, posting will be slim for a few days while I’m visiting New Mexico. Hasta luego!

No probing please.

We interrupt…

I’m heading for the ‘Land of Enchantment‘…and Aliens, A-Bombs, Anasazi,  and some really tasty Green Chile too…

New Mexico!

While there, I’ll be making a stop to the home of alien conspiracies… Roswell, NM. This will be my first visit there…should be fun and interesting!

I’m going to visit family for 5-6 days, so I’ll try to get one more Kaiju Art Collection photograph that I’ve been working on posted sometime tomorrow…then I’m outta here!

If I get time… I’ll try to post something interesting while I’m there.

Baltan is going with me…he’s hoping to find a lost relative (pictured above) near Roswell.

New Customs…Done!

Visit the Gallery!

I finished up the Minya & Bemler customs…finally!

Bemler is actually sold (my first!), and Minya is probably going to stay home with me as he’s not exactly everyone’s favorite kaiju but… we’ll see.

I went for a pearlized finish on both Kaiju… using mostly V-Color (a special vinyl paint from Japan) and a little Tamiya. Both are then given a clear vinyl coating to protect. These really do catch the light well!

Both figures started as flesh colored vinyl: Minya is by Marusan and Bemlar is a 1997 M1go, and yes… I made Minya have googly eyes on purpose.

U.S. Toys…of Japan

I stopped by Super7 and was able to pick up a couple of the U.S. Toys figures that they are now starting to offer…

Not all of the figures are available as of this writing…but they will be very soon!

Pictured above…2006 ‘Godzilla 1962’. I actually wanted Godzilla ’64 but didn’t realize that I bought a ’62 until I got it home… hopefully, I’ll eventually get the whole set!

The mini Goji’s released by U.S. Toys are: ’55, ’62, ’64, ’89, ’06. There is also a series of Orange Godzilla variants of all five available as well.

Quite a few of the classic Kaiju characters from the various Ultra series and the Godzilla films were released as a mini figure by U.S Toys…along with colorway variants on some figures ( I saw some nice black Ultra Seven’s in different poses!).

Click HERE to see Kaiju-Taro’s photo of the U.S. Toys booth at WCC ’08.

The colorways are simple, but very well done in these little 3″ figures. The U.S. Toy mini fig sculpts remind me of little M1Go’sthis is a good thing!

Here’s Booska…

I had an orange Booska too but limited myself to just 2 figures this Super7 visit. This Booska variant (also a crossed arms variant in clear produced) is cast in clear vinyl and filled with that colorful light reflecting paper (I can’t remember what it’s called). The sculpt is perfection and even features the little jiggly eyes!

Another great thing about the figures… the ‘building’ packaging!

Some of the figures are in window boxes and some in ‘blind’ building boxes. I don’t believe S7 will be selling anyone ‘blind’ boxes… I chose the bagged clear Booska and it was put in the blind building box.

The ‘blind’ boxes make for a nice little display addition too…something for your new figure to attack!

I  really like this box artwork …it’s what buildings would look like when you made them as a kid for your monsters to destroy…out of cardboard boxes and crayons!

Two ’62’s…

M1Go ’62 Godzilla hangin with his tiny twin…say hello to my little friend!

All in all…I can’t wait to get more of these little figures! My toy shelves are getting pretty crowded as it is, so these classy little figures are perfect to squeeze in!
Booska’s seal of approval!

Vintage Kaiju Artwork

Posted in Kaiju misc. with tags , , , , on August 25, 2008 by REdYOdA

Some amazing vintage plastic model box art by famed Japanese artist Shigeru Komatsuzaki.

Shigeru Komatsuzaki (1915-2001), a prolific illustration artist for over 50 years, is responsible for bringing us original artwork used for the Thunderbird series,  Nitto Gamera and Gappa series, the Mirrorman series, Dinosaur series and the exacting Military series of plastic model box artwork.  For collectors, Mr. Komatsuzaki’s artwork is sought after and highly prized.

Having produced over a thousand original pieces of artwork in his career, Shigeru Komatsuzaki originals are extremely rare, as most of the original paintings used on the beautiful model boxes is gone forever…sadly destroyed in a massive fire.

Komatsuzaki  also supplied some of the character design for TOHO’s 1959 film The Mysterians. He is also given film credits for his wonderful conceptual and costume design for the 1963 film Matango and 1965’s Atragon.

I just love the  kaiju artwork on these!

Ultraman’s weakness

…he can’t see very well.

It looks awfully hot in there too! It must be hard to choreograph kaiju battles when you’re sweating and can’t see!
