Vintage Tsuburaya…behind the scenes

After I had finished painting Ragon…I remembered this vintage footage that featured a funny little segment showing legendary director Eiji Tsuburaya having a sit-down with Ragon and the ape-like monster M1.

Tsuburaya gives advice to Ragon & M1

This really sweet little 30 min. documentary about Tsuburaya features some behind the scenes footage of Tsuburaya on the studio back lot and the set of Ultra Q and other films.  There is really some amazing footage throughout this mini-doc, scenes showing miniature work and concept art (brief shots of the ‘Moonlight SY-3 Rocket’ art from DAM!) .  The Ragon/M1 segment comes in at 11:55.

I‘m afraid that I don’t have subtitles for this…but if you’re as big of fan of Eiji Tsuburaya as I am…it’s just great to see him in action!

Of course, as I have mentioned many times before…
The absolute best way to find out more about this fascinating man and his legacy… is to pick up a copy of August Ragone’s splendid book:

Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters.
