ICFSB 4/18/09!

Posted in Customs, Fun Stuff, Shows with tags , , , , on April 19, 2009 by REdYOdA

Great People, Amazing Toys, &…KISS ??!!

That’s ICFSB! I had a killer time at the show and reconnected with some Skullbrainer’s I had met before and also met lots of new ones. The turnout was incredible and I was completely blown away by how far some people had come to attend this show. There were people from both coasts and many places in between.

ICFSB Flyer art by Josh H.

The talent exhibited in both the toys and images was phenomenal!  Seeing the toys and then meeting a lot of the artists was really something! I had a great time doing a little performance art with the Electronic Theremin Dempagon and Smoking Gas Bawer too!

Toy pics are being posted all over Flickr (you just can’t top Joe’s detailed coverage) and skullbrain…so I’m going to go light with showing toy photos and just posting mostly show pics. I know Toybot Studios will have his usual unsurpassed coverage plus another installment of Toybot TV featuring everyone’s favorite fearless reporter Alex (aka bannedinDC)  from S7…I can’t wait!

LASH Show at Super7 Oct 11.

Posted in Customs, Kaiju misc. with tags , , , , on October 14, 2008 by REdYOdA

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend artist Richard Montanari Jr. aka LASH ‘s solo show at Super7 this past Saturday. LASH brought in a dizzying array of incredible custom kaiju, debuted some of his fine art prints, and to top it all off…LASH designed T-shirts to commemorate his first solo show and offered a slick photo book highlighting his sought after custom kaiju!

I really wish I had more photo’s to share…but like an idiot, I had the image stabilization turned off on my camera, so I got a lot of shaky shots. I think I was bit nervous too…being somewhat new to Super7’s forum, ‘Skullbrain‘, and finding myself in a room filled with hardened Skullbrainer’s! Long time Toy aficionado/photographer… and the man behind the great Toybot Studios site has posted some great pics and video of the event that you should check out too.

See what I mean^^^

Pictured above was a favorite of mine…the Captain America Mutant Head, sadly NFS though. I was going to start listing my favorites here …but I just ended up listing almost every piece LASH brought with him! I did manage to take one piece home for myself, I don’t have a clear Gargamel Zagoran in my collection, so much to my delight, Rich had brought an amazing one with him…

It was really hard to decide between Zag and a really well done little business-suited Gameppa (you know I like kaiju in suits!), but Zag won this round since sadly, I could only buy one.

All in all… a really great time! Rich seemed a truly genuine and nice guy who has a lot of passion for his art and Japanese toys, not to mention a hyper-talented artist and customizer. Home-runs all around, including the aforementioned fine art prints and book. I was also pleased to meet Brian Flynn, Japanese toy god and owner of Super7, plus some other artists and skullbrainers. Can’t wait for your next show LASH! I think I better start saving now!

Oh yeah, what didn’t sell at the show…went up at the Super7 store…and disappeared faster than you can say ‘Mummy Boy’…but there are a couple left, get ’em while you can!

U.S. Toys…of Japan

Posted in Toy Reviews with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 26, 2008 by REdYOdA

I stopped by Super7 and was able to pick up a couple of the U.S. Toys figures that they are now starting to offer…

Not all of the figures are available as of this writing…but they will be very soon!

Pictured above…2006 ‘Godzilla 1962’. I actually wanted Godzilla ’64 but didn’t realize that I bought a ’62 until I got it home… hopefully, I’ll eventually get the whole set!

The mini Goji’s released by U.S. Toys are: ’55, ’62, ’64, ’89, ’06. There is also a series of Orange Godzilla variants of all five available as well.

Quite a few of the classic Kaiju characters from the various Ultra series and the Godzilla films were released as a mini figure by U.S Toys…along with colorway variants on some figures ( I saw some nice black Ultra Seven’s in different poses!).

Click HERE to see Kaiju-Taro’s photo of the U.S. Toys booth at WCC ’08.

The colorways are simple, but very well done in these little 3″ figures. The U.S. Toy mini fig sculpts remind me of little M1Go’sthis is a good thing!

Here’s Booska…

I had an orange Booska too but limited myself to just 2 figures this Super7 visit. This Booska variant (also a crossed arms variant in clear produced) is cast in clear vinyl and filled with that colorful light reflecting paper (I can’t remember what it’s called). The sculpt is perfection and even features the little jiggly eyes!

Another great thing about the figures… the ‘building’ packaging!

Some of the figures are in window boxes and some in ‘blind’ building boxes. I don’t believe S7 will be selling anyone ‘blind’ boxes… I chose the bagged clear Booska and it was put in the blind building box.

The ‘blind’ boxes make for a nice little display addition too…something for your new figure to attack!

I  really like this box artwork …it’s what buildings would look like when you made them as a kid for your monsters to destroy…out of cardboard boxes and crayons!

Two ’62’s…

M1Go ’62 Godzilla hangin with his tiny twin…say hello to my little friend!

All in all…I can’t wait to get more of these little figures! My toy shelves are getting pretty crowded as it is, so these classy little figures are perfect to squeeze in!
Booska’s seal of approval!
You can see larger versions of my pics over at Flickr.

Bullmark Vintage Commercial

Posted in Kaiju misc. with tags , , , , , , on August 2, 2008 by REdYOdA

I didn’t upload this to youtube… but I love this vintage commercial…

I had this video on Myspace for quite some time but the embed didn’t seem to work right, so here it is.

I was in  Super7 here in San Francisco and noticed that they have two of these ball throwing kaiju toys…with Boxes!
I was afraid to ask how much. The kaiju toy is actually about 2 feet tall!
It’s amazing…the vinyl & collectibles that Brian Flynn & Co. are able to get.

I don’t know if I’m lucky or cur$ed to live near Super7.

Those kids are Kawaii!

Calamari Calamity

I am a BIG fan of Mr.Frank Kozik.

I’ve been a fan since I first saw his hyper-colorful and wonderfully demented concert posters waaaay back, sorry Frank, I’m not saying your old…just…maybe I’m old..oh whatever…
I have a few of his silkscreen concert prints… I would plaster every wall with them if I could.
When I found out that Frank had got into vinyl..lets say I was more than a little excited!

My personal favorite vinyl creation of Frank’s are his IKA (Ika means Squid in Japanese).

The first release:  squidly creatures called IKA angry squid head & tentacles, produced in a variety of colorways and clear vinyls, and very cool! Next up are the SALARI IKA’s(working man- wage slave, and… remember ika?). Kozik, who designed these overworked squid men, teamed up with the fantastic toy producer Wonderwall for their ‘Kaiju For Grown Ups’ series to bring us these tasty beasties.
A real Salaryman…
The Salaryman

I really liked the Ika Gilas… but I must say… I REALLY liked the Salari Ika design!
Click thru to see my Kaiju Art featuing Kozik’s smartly dressed creation!

When the Salari’s were released in early ’08, I immediately acquired the glowing black suited version, the only version produced, of the white collar squid and… I love it.
Next…pre-SDCC ’08… I got my slimy hands on the Salary Ika in clear vinyl with an orange head & black highlights and… I love it!

Dammit!!!!! I jumped the gun…
Not realizing that Super7+Kozik+InTheYellow (I wonder who makes any $$$???) were releasing an SDCC ’08 Salari Ika version…exactly like MY clear Ika… but stuffed with shredded money! Dammit!!!!

Frank’s got so much money he’s shredding it up and putting it in his figures!
…I kid…I kid.

I may still get one, but these don’t come cheap, so……since I already have this clear version…customize!

I’ve done a few customs before for myself and some friends. Time to get busy.
I love the their original ‘money’ idea, so I’m just going to tweak it ever so slightly… with Japanese YEN!

First…Hit eBay and track down ‘play’ YEN… Check! -I’m afraid I can’t shred any real yen.
Second…Get toy YEN from Japan… Check!
Third…Disassemble my favorite Calamari, break out hairdryer… Check!
Fourth…I have different sizes of YEN, so just…Stuffed Calamari! ...Check!
Finally finished! This will have to do for now…

Behold the Yen stuffed Salari Ika!!!

Click pic to summon the Giant Squid!
Salary Ika Part II!

I sure do wish I had the cool ‘squid money’ header card though..booo.

Regular pic of YEN custom…

Unprocessed photo

No YEN were harmed in the making of this squid.

…I must mention that there is another painted custom version of the Salari Ika, produced by the talented artist Leecifer, for StrangeKiss. This Salari Ika features original ‘One Night Only’ artwork that compliments the ‘rockin’ mollusk!

Check it out!

I‘ve seen Leecifer’s other customs and they are really something!

Who knew 2008 would see me up to my eyeballs in squid!

Thanks Frank!

EDIT: 8/1/08 Mr. Flynn and Mr. Kozik are a little bit richer. I went ahead & went over to Super7 and picked up Frank’s $$$ filled version…I just had to have that header card!
