Pre-KISF Welcome Dinner & The Nagata Collection!

Posted in Fun Stuff, Kaiju misc., Shows, Ultra Seven, ultraman with tags , , , , , , on December 13, 2009 by REdYOdA

Max Toy’s Mark Nagata was kind enough to invite a throng of Japanese toy collectors into to his family’s new home in SF for the ‘Kaiju Invade SFwelcome dinner…and also a chance to see his amazing collection in it’s new location!

[This post is really pic heavy so sorry if it loads a bit slow…click any image to enlarge]

Mark Nagata…

The dinner at Mark’s was held to welcome Japanese toy makers Yajima-san of Dream Rocket and Ichimiya-san of Sunguts on their first visit to the U.S…and also Matt Walker aka Dead Presidents in from Massachusetts. All gearing up for their upcoming show with Max Toy!…

‘Kaiju Invade San Francisco!’

Ichimiya-san (front) & Yajima-san in Mark’s astounding den of rare toys…

Matt Walker of Dead Presidents!…

Dead President’s also impressed everyone with his pinstriping skill and put on some last minute touches for the following day’s show…

I have a feeling that Matt enjoys what he does!…

All together I probably spent over an hour & half down in the ‘Museum‘ trying to take in all of Mark’s amazing collection…and it is in no way dedicated to just Ultraman…there are vinyls and other rarities from many of the other old Japanese TV shows/movies as well as a world-class collection of rayguns and robots!…

One of the first things I had to seek out was the uber-rare 1966 Bullmark ‘Girls Version’ Red Ultraman…only 4 exist in collector’s hands!!!

An Ultra Ride!…

Props too!…

Some new toys mixed in as well such as Neo-Eyezon!…

Vintage Robots and Trikes!…

Amazing vintage Kikaider collection!…

Protoypes…how awesome is that!…

Wouldn’t be an Ultraman collection without some Beta Capsules…

Some toys I had never seen like the Hyata below…

Ha! Ragon above has the same expression I had the whole time I was looking at this stuff…

More rareness…

Ultramen galore…

An Ultra Door!…

Giant Robos…

…and of course Ultra Bowling…

Lots of Ultra art was spread about the room…

An awesome Herculoids sketch…

Check out this giant Harryhausen Cylops guarding the room…

A dissected Eyezon…

…and Eyezon’s to paint…

Everywhere you look there was more incredible toys to behold…it really felt like being down in some super secret Tokyo toy shop that had all the rarest toys…

Toys in unexpected places…

You could tell that there was actually much more still in boxes…I would love to see what treasures these held too…

Mark asked some of us to sign his famous Mirrorman Statue but I realized I forgot to after I got home…oops 😦 …hopefully I’ll get to visit again someday soon!

Mark watching DP pinstriping…

Matt tries to make a Lion Maru face…and nails it…

Ultraman tells Toybot Studio’s Kirkland that Mark’s collection is even bigger than his…

Kaiju Chronicle’s Joe gets a closer look…

Matt holds the Giant Max Toy/Dead President’s Eyezon! This thing is insanely beautiful…

Upstairs there were plenty of shenanigans too…

Harmond loans his son’s laser gun to Yajima-san…

Sunguts isn’t sure what to make of this thing…

Gatchabert chows down at the toy filled table…

Mark’s awesome son Max also helped keep everyone entertained by showing us his own cool toy collection…and his great skill playing Mario…

A good time was definitely had by all! Finally getting to see Mark’s collection in person and having the chance to meet many in the Japanese toy and collecting world as well as other artists and cool creative people…not to mention Mark’s very talented guests of honor made for a night I won’t soon forget!

A huge thanks to Mark Nagata and his wonderful family for the invite and being such gracious hosts!

Don’t forget to see this amazing show at Double Punch in North Beach SF…ends December 30th!

…and remember Xmas shopping is actually very easy!

Just buy everyone kaiju!

Ashuran was finally defeated. Though it did take the combined forces of Ultra Seven, Jack, Leo, & Sevenger to take him out!

Time for a rematch!

Projects

I’m working on quite a few new projects…here’s a little teaser of an Ultraman piece I’m working on for Mark Nagata’s Toy Karma 2 at Rotofugi in September. I’m kinda doing it in Mark’s honor…his love of old ray guns (mine too!)…and Ultraman of course!

This M1-go 19″ Ultraman will be part of a kinda Steam Punk wall sculpture (don’t worry, the vinyl won’t get harmed…well except by my painting 😉  ) It’s still a work in progress…but I though it looked kinda cool for a pic…

Pestar!

Posted in Customs, Kaiju Art, Tokusatsu, ultraman with tags , , , on May 13, 2009 by REdYOdA

Part Vampire Bat…Part Starfish…All Crazy!

I'm crazy!

Pestar debuts in 1966’s Ultraman Episode 13 “Oil SOS!”

Pestar has been attacking oil tankers in Tokyo Bay!...because that’s what Bat/Starfish creatures eat of course…Oil!

mmm....tanker

Tanker goes down!

After Pestar dissappears beneath the sea…the Science Patrol thinks of a plan to lure the mixed up monster out into the open for an attack. They decide to drop oil barrels into the ocean to lure Pestar into their sights…

Oscar caliber performances all around.

Pestar takes the bait!…

Pestar emerges!

These barrels are delicious!

Thanks Science Patrol!

Science Patrol mounts an attack…oops…this bat fish breathes fire…doh!

Umm...I think you should've seen this coming.

Screw these tiny oil Barrels and that pesky Science Patrol…I’m going for the refinery!

Now we're talkin'!

Science Patrol attacks again! …and actually takes the mighty Pestar down…

Damn you Science Patrol!

Pestar is down but they’ve also managed to set the whole place on fire…Luckily you-know-who shows up to put it out…and the crumpled mass formerly known as Pestar lets out one final attack before Ultraman puts him down for good…

Ultraman...I stab at thee!

Now to put out all of this fire with the ‘Ultra Water Spray’…you didn’t know I could do that one…did you!

Ultra Water Spray!

And done…the end.

Good job Science Patrol.

I love this show.

This brings me to the custom Pestar I just finished up last week. This is actually just one piece I’ve done that will go along with a couple of others to form a horrifying scene in an upcoming art show. More on that later…

Got Oil?

REdYOdA Pestar!

Pestar's back

Also working on projects for Toy Karma 2…stay tuned!

Oh, I found this cute plush Pestar too!…

Too funny!

Kemur & Z-Ton

Posted in henshin, The Kaiju Art Collection, Tokusatsu, Ultra Q, ultraman with tags , , , , , , , on April 30, 2009 by REdYOdA

After finishing a custom Zeton for a friend, I decided to finally create a new image for the Kaiju Art Collection too!

I’ll post pics of the new custom after it’s new owner receives it. For this image, I used a custom I did several months ago…

Zeton! aka…Z-Ton

I’ve done some terrible things…

I've done some terrible things.

This M1-Go sculpt was an instant favorite because it’s one of the few business suited kaijin (human sized monsters) that I like so much…and I’m definitely not alone there! Basically it’s M1’s Semi-ningen’s suited body with a M1 Kemurujin head stuck on.

The difference between Kemur, Kemurujin, Z-ton, Zeton, and  Zetton?…

I’ll start with Kemurujin…or Kemur for short because he was first on the screen in 1966’s Ultra Q

Kemur Seijin!

He has a thing for Ferris wheels in the very dark episode…

I'll take that.

Kemur makes a very brief return in 1967’s Ultraman Episode 33 “The Forbidden World”, after being summoned by the evil alien Mephilas! Kemur II as he is sometimes known, is on screen for about 2 seconds…but it’s his first time in color…

Don't blink...or you'll miss my close-up!

Now on to Z-Ton, Zeton, and Zetton…

For Ultraman’s final episode…Episode 39 ” Farewell Ultraman” in 1967, apparently the producers decided to bring Kemurujin back. But, as they often did, they used a previously used monster suit…made a few changes in appearance…and called him something else for the new episode.

This time Tsuburaya’s team changed the head a bit and added a business suit to the now human sized…Zeton, or Z-ton as he is listed in some kaiju/kaijin reference books…

As before…we only get to see him breifly…basically he stands up after being tackled by the Science Patrol, turns around and gets shot in the face…

Like my new suit?

Headshot!

Thats gotta hurt!

OK…who is Zetton then???…

This guy…Zeton’s boss… also from the final episode, who finally overwhelms our hero Ultraman…

You're toast Ultraman!

The two aliens in the final episode are from the planet Z-Ton…so we have the lesser alien Zeton and his boss Zetton…creative huh?

Many toy companies created figures of Kemur and Zeton…though the most confusing is the 1991 release of Z-ton by M1-Go due to the cost effectiveness of using Kemur’s head on the Semi-ningen’s suited body sculpt. M1’s Kemur, Semi-Ningen, and Z-ton were all produced in 1991. You’ll often see M1’s Z-ton listed as Kemur or Kemur Seijin (Seijin means Adult) because of the mix-match parts. We will see the same suit resurface again for M1’s Keronia in 2001.

Finally…here is a mislabled video of ‘Kemurujin’ and Ultraman performing a Benny Hill-esque fight…not sure of the video’s origin… so chime in if you do!

Video is from Gojira73rules

Pics of my new version of the Zeton with a polka-dot tie coming soon…
